A collection of all things interesting and all things related to class found around the web. And I've complied them. Here. For you! You're welcome

PS Besides being awesome these are great for review. Choose a couple to read and test yourself: how can you tie the information back to class? Look for patterns in regions, distribution, density, regions. How can you explain the information with a theory or model we've studied?

The Tangled Roots of English:  Article w/ visuals
The peoples of India, Iran and Europe speak a Babel of tongues, but most — English included — are descended from an ancient language known as proto-Indo-European. Scholars have argued for two centuries about the identity and homeland of those who spoke this parent language, but a surprisingly sudden resolution of this longstanding issue may be at hand. Many origins have been proposed for the birthplace of the Indo-European languages, but only two serious candidates are now under discussion, one of which assumes they were spread by the sword, the other by the plow.

Poor Farmers Lose Income When Milk Spoils During Delivery: This $5 Jug Helps Solve That: Article
In Kenya alone, 80% of the milk is produced by small-scale farmers who helplessly watched their income source spill and spoil during delivery. For dairy farmers in developing countries, one of the greatest challenges is safely transporting milk to its destination, since the flimsy pails they relied on couldn’t handle the task.

FRONTLINE: Life in Baghdad: Video
A rare and surprising look at the everyday lives of ordinary young Iraqis. Against the backdrop of war, life goes on. Families are still attending carnivals and eating ice cream, young boys are diving into canals, teenagers are dancing in the streets. Most videos from Iraq don't make you smile. This one will.

This is What Humanity's Impact on The Planet Looks Like: Photo Essay
Overdevelopment, Overpopulation, Overshoot includes photos and essays exploring man's complicated relationship with the planet. The book “presents the stark reality of a world transformed by human action, action that threatens our future and the buzzing, blossoming diversity of life with which we share the planet,” an introduction reads.

I never realized how dumb our cities are until I saw what a smart one looks like: images/video/text

Geography of health

Like it or not, folks, the guided notes activity for our latest section is really helping you build valuable writing skills.  And also has hidden reading skills.  Can you identify the main idea?  AWESOME.  Can you identify the supporting details? EVEN MORE AWESOME.  I know that this ins't the most creative or exciting way to learn the material, however as a Social Studies class I am also supposed to teach you reading skills.  If you can find the main ideas in your textbook, which is written at a very high level, you should be able to do it on standardized test in the future.
  • Remember, the point of your reading is not only to understand patterns in diseases and health but also how health affects populations.
  • Be prepared for a reading quiz........
  • OH! and check Edmodo and Your Assignments Page to compare your Summaries, Main Ideas and Supporting details to my own.  Instead of collecting everyones, I will let you cross check your work with my own.
Have a great long weekend.
