- Extra Credit: WHY WE NEED TO LEARN GEOGRAPHY
1. GeoWalking: watch an example here
Ever heard of “Jaywalking” from the Tonight Show? In this segment, Jay Leno walks around and asks people general knowledge questions from geography, history, literature and some science. The purpose is to identify what people know and use their fallacies for comical purposes. I want you to try the same thing.
I want you to create a “GeoWalking” video. You are to develop questions, ask the questions, and film and edit your video. I also want you to ask people who are your age or within a few years of your age. I want you to ask simple geographic questions that everyone should know to anyone you can find. For example, everyone should know who the president is, but many people do not know who the vice president is. So you might ask “Who is the vice-president?” and film their responses. Also, you could walk around with a blank map of the world and ask people to point out certain countries. The purpose is for us to see what people do not know.
Other questions could be:
a. When people leave the country where they were born to live in another country, it is called
i. The answer is Emigration.
b. The advance in communication that enabled ideas to spread around the world in a matter of seconds was the introduction of
i. The answer is satellite communication. See how many people say Internet.
c. The Great Lakes were formed primarily as a result of
i. The answer is glaciations.
d. The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) lowered trade barriers between
i. US, Mexico and Canada
e. What religion is practiced by most people who live in India?
i. Hinduism
f. What is the “Corn Belt”?
i. A major region of the US that produces corn.
g. Name the oceans.
i. Pacific
ii. Atlantic
iii. Indian
iv. Southern
v. Arctic
For an example of what I’m wanting go to YouTube and type in:
However you do it, have fun with it. If you ask how long does it have to be, I want you to make that decision.
